Fifth Option Announced at Last Minute
The Official Proposal
That the council adopts a primary/secondary model for future education organisation on the Island with the following age ranges:-
4-11 primary schools 11-19 secondary schools
That primary schools are established with a mix of 1 & 2 classes per year group
That secondary schools are established with 11-14 (lower) and 14-19 (upper) sections. All schools will be required to sign up delivering a diverse Islandwide academic and vocational agenda through the 14-19 consortium.
That a more equitable funding regime across the phases is established which will
a. release funds to support the most vulnerable pupils throughout their education
b. release funds to support those pupils who may need targeted supported for a short period of time
That following this decision on structure, officers are instructed to bring to the Cabinet meeting in April a paper outlining the next steps, including the preparations for formal consultation in June and July, ahead of the publication of statutory notices in the autumn.
That the representations made by governing bodies and other partners over recent weeks are reviewed by officers, in the context of this decision on structure. The Cabinet meeting in April will formally request officers to undertake detailed work regarding the distribution of schools, giving consideration of the presumption in favour of the retention of rural schools.
“I hope it is not the case that Mr Pugh is trying to paint himself as the saviour of schools at the last minute. After all the uncertainty, confusion, distress and torment this process has caused for parents and children, to ‘play the system’ at the last minute will come across as points scoring and an attempt at repairing a cracked image rather than a true attempt at resolving the process satisfactorily” - A concerned parent.

Whatever your views on option 5 can anyone now say that the Council;
- WILL NOT still close primary/rural schools on mass.
- WILL NOT still create super size high schools.
If you can declare this then you must be able to see the future.

Anon,
I’m not sure where you get that idea from, one lady, who has made her feelings very clear, has been absolutely slated for moving here and then trying hard to keep schools open.
Other ‘Overnors’ have been trying extremely hard in the background to support the SOS campaign.
Do you not think that the schools system is one of the reason that people ‘did’ move here?
We know the issues that these bigger schools can bring and we made a big change to move here, we certainly are not screaming for change now we are here… Well at least not to the schools, maybe some things do need to change though and I witnessed about 28 last night!

How many parents who are supporting these changes have moved to the Island in recent years and now want to change the school system here on the Island to what they had on the mainland?
It never surprises me that the ones that shout the loudest are the ones that moved here because they wanted the Island way of life and within five minutes are screaming for change.
